Valentine's Day

This is not for my sun-eyed, coral-lipped, rose-cheeked, earth-skimming distracted soulmate, but just cuz I like it.

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

I should have realized, when this turned out to be my favorite of Shakespeare's sonnets (yeah yeah, and Sting's favorite, and probably every other idiot's), that I was destined to be a critic, and not a writer.

Y'know, I prefer to quote Kurt Cobain on this magical holiday:

"What was she for Valentine's?
An old forgotten rape of mine.
Some day she will die alone.
He seemed to me to know
All that glitters is sour
All the light in his face...
Jesus saves."

Can I ask what is in the bag that is displayed in your photo, Josh? It looks like either an aborted fetus or some shrimp.

Speaking of aborted fetuses, after seeing the abominable Being Julia, I can now safely say that Imelda Staunton deserves the Academy Award this year. Kate Winslet is all kick-ass and stuff, but DAMN, if I ever get knocked up, I hope my abortionist as as comforting as Vera Drake.

This is Stephanie, by the way.

Yeah, I figgered it was you.

That bag either contains WMDs or it is in fact not a bag, but simply my bloodied left arm, in a photo taken (cheap camera, sorry) shortly after my exciting summer encounter with three young hoodlums.

As for Staunty, I choose (spoiler alert!) euthanasia over abortion. I for one will be happy when Swankdoodle wins. I was discussing M$B with Lisa today, and as she ran down the film's many flaws, it became more and more clear to me how pivotal Swank's performance is to my appreciation of the movie. There's a lot of other stuff, too, of course, but still. And let's face it, Mike Leigh is a tremendous filmmaker, but he really doesn't have to be such a cranky dick all the time.
